Why Rug Size Matters
Choosing the wrong rug size is one of the most common decorating mistakes. A rug that's too small makes a room feel disconnected, while the right size anchors your furniture and defines the space beautifully. This guide walks you through exactly how to choose the perfect rug size for every room in your home.
The Golden Rule: Go Bigger Than You Think
Most people underestimate how large a rug needs to be. When in doubt, size up. A larger rug creates a sense of luxury and makes a room feel more cohesive and intentional.
How to Choose a Rug Size by Room
Living Room
The living room is where rug sizing matters most. You have three main options:
- All legs on the rug: The most cohesive look. All furniture legs rest on the rug. Best for larger rooms.
- Front legs only: The most popular approach. Only the front legs of sofas and chairs sit on the rug. Works well in medium-sized rooms.
- Rug as an accent: The rug sits in front of the sofa without touching the furniture. Only recommended for very small spaces.
For a standard living room, a 200×300 cm rug is a safe starting point. Larger rooms benefit from a 240×340 cm or bigger.
Dining Room
Your rug should extend at least 60–70 cm beyond each side of the table so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table, then add 120–140 cm to both the length and width. A round table pairs beautifully with a round rug of the same principle.
Bedroom
For a king or queen bed, place a large rug (at least 200×300 cm) so that it extends 50–60 cm on each side and at the foot of the bed. Alternatively, use two smaller runners on either side of the bed for a symmetrical look.
Entryway & Hallway
Runners are ideal here. Choose a runner that leaves 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side. For entryways, a rug that fits the full width of the space (minus a small border) creates a welcoming first impression.
How to Measure Before You Buy
- Clear the room or move furniture to its intended position.
- Use painter's tape to mark the rug's footprint on the floor.
- Live with the taped outline for a day — walk around it, sit in your furniture, and see how it feels.
- Adjust as needed before ordering.
